DocxToPost – Import Word (DOCX) & Markdown to Posts, Pages & Custom Post Types
by Nagaraj
Copy a Word document into WordPress and it falls apart. Images go missing. Lists flatten. Tables lose their headers. You spend longer fixing the post than writing it.
DocxToPost reads the .docx file itself, not the clipboard. Every heading, list, table and image comes through as real blocks, and every image lands in your Media Library with its alt text.
Markdown works the same way. Notes from Obsidian, Notion or Joplin, a README, or an answer from ChatGPT or Claude all import without reformatting.
Everything in the free version:
- Real blocks, not one big lump: Your document arrives as proper paragraph, heading, list, image, table and quote blocks you can move and edit individually, not a single Classic block you have to fight. Running the classic editor instead? It detects that and gives you plain HTML.
- Undo an import: Changed your mind? One link on the confirmation screen moves the post to the trash.
- Simple upload: Drag and drop your .docx or .md file.
- Import from your Media Library: Already have Word documents on your site? Pick a .docx from the Media Library and import it. The original is copied for the import and never changed or removed.
- Import from a Google Docs link: Paste the link to a shared Google Doc and it imports with its headings, lists, tables and images, no downloading and re-uploading.
- Markdown too:
.mdand.markdownfiles import with headings, emphasis, links, nested lists, blockquotes, tables and fenced code blocks intact. Code becomes a real Code block, not a paragraph in a monospace font. - Formatting preserved: Headings, paragraphs, bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, superscript, subscript, blockquotes and paragraph alignment all survive the trip.
- Real lists: Bulleted and numbered lists come through as proper lists, nested sub-bullets included.
- Tables with headers: Header rows become real table headers, so your tables stay readable and accessible.
- Embedded image extraction: Images inside your Word document are pulled out and added to the Media Library, with the alt text you set in Word.
- All public post types: Publish to Posts, Pages, or any Custom Post Type registered on your site.
- Full status options: Publish immediately, save as Draft, submit for Pending Review, or mark Private.
- Live preview: See exactly how the post will look before you publish.
- Featured images: Upload a featured image alongside your document, or choose one already in your Media Library.
- Categories and tags: Assign both while you import.
- Post meta: Edit the slug, excerpt and author.
- Role-based access: Choose which user roles can use the plugin.
Why upgrade to Pro?
The free plugin imports one document at a time, with no limit. Pro is for the day you have a folder of them.
- Bulk import, up to 100 files in one run. Drop in .docx and .md files together. Review every title, featured image and SEO field before anything is created. A bad file fails on its own row and the rest keep going.
- Drip publishing. Spread a batch across days or weeks instead of publishing it all at once.
- Yoast SEO and Rank Math fields filled from templates, with per-document overrides.
- One-click undo of a whole batch, plus full import history.
- Choose from Google Drive. Pick private Google Docs straight from your Drive, several at once, with no sharing needed. Importing one again updates the same post.
- Keep newsletter and brochure layouts as responsive columns instead of one long column.
- WebP image optimization, only when it actually makes the file smaller.
Watch the bulk import, start to finish:
Pro starts at $49/year for one site. Pro is a separate plugin, not a licence key for this one: install Pro, then deactivate this plugin, because both use the same admin menu. Your imported posts are not affected.
The Upgrade screen inside the plugin compares Free and Pro side by side. See Pro plans
More from the developer
BackupScope is a free WordPress backup plugin that shows what is inside a backup before you need it, and BackupScope Storage Insights shows what uses your disk space, read-only. Both are listed on the plugin’s More Tools screen.
External services
This plugin connects to one external service, and only when you use the feature that needs it.
Google Docs (docs.google.com), to import a document from a Google Docs link. When you paste a link on the Google Docs link tab and click Convert & Preview, your site requests that one document from Google as a Word (.docx) file: https://docs.google.com/document/d/{document id}/export?format=docx. The request contains only the document’s id, taken from the link you pasted, plus what any web request carries, such as your server’s IP address. No account details, no site data and none of your other content are sent. Nothing is sent to Google if you do not use this feature.
The service is provided by Google: Terms of Service, Privacy Policy.
